What is E-commerce?

E-commerce (electronic commerce or EC) is the buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet, especially the World Wide Web. In practice, this term and a newer term, e-business, are often used interchangeably. For online retail selling, the term e-tailing is sometimes used.
E-commerce can be divided into:
  • E-tailing or "virtual storefronts" on Web sites with online catalogs, sometimes gathered into a "virtual mall"
  • The gathering and use of demographic data through Web contacts
  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), the business-to-business exchange of data
  • e-mail and fax and their use as media for reaching prospects and established customers (for example, with newsletters)
  • Business-to-business buying and selling
  • The security of business transactions

Introduction of Dymocks.com

The Dymocks George Street store is Sydney's greatest bookstore. It all began in 1881 when William Dymock commenced business as a bookseller in a rented room at a Market street. As his business grew he moved to larger and grander premises until, in the 1890's he could claim to have a million books in the store. William Dymock died in his 39th year leaving the store to be handled by his sister Marjory who later was married to John Forsyth. The store was established in 1922 by the Forsyth family. Main Problems with E-commerce

The main problems with e-commerce are that e-commerce disturbs the social relationship of the customer with the seller and unemployment. As shopping online has become so popular, people now don't bother to go to malls or shops anymore to buy products. Now this has ruined the social relationship between the buyer and the seller. Another problem is unemployment. Due to online shopping, malls and shops are running out of business. This means that the workers who used to work there are also becoming unemployed. And as e-commerce is increasing, people are not getting jobs in shops or malls anymore.

One of the best solution is not to sell all the products online. The companies should hold back some products which are interesting to see in person rather than online. In this way, e-commerce will work out and shops and malls will not run out of business. For unemployment, the companies can hire people for e-commerce sites. The staffs can operate or can work on customer services on the sites. But for this, they also need computer skills.
